GOAL SETTING

This week's blog will be short and sweet.  Why?  Because I want interaction.  Whether I get it through your comments directly to the blog, my forums at Big House Power, my facebook profile, fan, or group pages.

Goal Setting
This is an interesting topic for me as we al talk about goals.  What are our goals?  What do we want to accomplish?  My goal for this blog is simple, to acquire information.  I want to hear what you feel the best way to accomplish your goals our?  This is being inspired by my rereading of one of my all time favorite books, THE DNA OF SUCCESS by Jack Zufelt.  I will accumulate all of the feedback and write up the responses.  I will leave you with this thought from Zufelt's book,

"Goal Setting is the reigning king of all success techniques.  For decades we have been told if we simply write down our goals and read them daily, somehow we will reach them.  My research shows that eight out of the ten things a person writes on a goal list will never happen.  Everyone has goals they don't achieve and many they don't even begin to work on!"

Thanks in advance for your responses

  1. Hey Joe,

I am still working on updating my 100 life goals, but my greatest goal that encompasses all my categories of goals is to be
a disciple of Christ. My immediate goals is to open a gym in the next 6 months and buy a new house.

    1) Family Goals
    2) Travel Goals
    3) Physical Goals
    4) Experience Goals
    5) Influence Goals

  2. Coach Kenn,

I think your quote from Zufelt's book is a heart stopper - especially for someone like me who is goal oriented. I dont want to even THINK about my goals never happening!

For me, when it comes to goals, I am in a season of believing it is a game of measuring and accepting RISK. (And by the way, I am not getting this from any particular book, I am just basically journaling on your blog - thanks!! :-) I feel if I fully understand the risks and yet still committ myself, I can then set a goal and attain that goal with confidence.

My own risk measurement is two-fold: 1.) Understand the risk of commiting myself to each goal (the time it will take, the FAILURES I WILL encounter - and dont even get me started on failures... the money involved, the things I have to learn to make it happen, etc) and 2.) the risk of NOT accomplishing the goal (will I pigeon-hole myself for life? What does this mean for the people I was supposed to touch if I give up or do not make it happen?)

So, RISK is the latest component of goal setting AND acheiving that I have been dealing with, but I can talk at length about other components of goal setting I have been dealing with. The hardest part has been having a healthy understanding of failure. I absolutely reccommend Failing Forward by John C Maxwell. I used to use Michael Jordon not making the basketball team as my own motivation to strive, even when I am the "odd" choice - or least likely to succeed. But there are thousands of other underdog stories of people who actually accomplish PIE IN THE SKY goals they set for themselves. Again, I believe they understood 1.) the risk of commitment and 2.) the risk of never making it happen.

SOOO much more I can say on this, but I have probably already put you to sleep, lol! Thanks for asking CK.

  3. House,
Zufelt's excerpt reminds me of something I have been working on in my life for about a year. It is based on a documentary DVD called The Secret. It teaches that our thoughts become our reality, thoughts become things, "what a man can conceive a man can achieve," etc. What is boils down to is the Law of Attraction. Our thoughts become reality because we are attracting the things we are thinking about.

Zufelt's quote on goal setting highlights a very important detail about making the Law of Attraction work for us. That is, if we have doubts when thinking about our goals then doubt is exactly what we attract! Is this why people fail to achieve goals? Maybe. It would depend on the person. One thing is certain, doubt is a common emotion for people. It is natural, but that doesn't mean it unchangeable. Confidence, happiness, and self-worth are natural human feelings too.

To leave you with one last thing: The easiest way to eliminate doubt is to feel good. When thinking about your goals and how you will achieve them, feel good. BELIEVE it will happen. IMAGINE the feeling when you achieve that goal. Love what you are doing Coach Kenn.
